Rugaber: AP Economics Writer Companies add 67K workers, but jobless rate rises Companies add 67,000 workers in August; unemployment rate climbs to 9.6 percent WASHINGTON (AP) — Private employers hired more workers over the past three month than first thought, lifting hopes for the weak economy ahead of the Labor Day weekend. But the unemployment rate rose in August for the first time in four months as more people entered the market looking for work.

Companies added a net total of 67,000 new jobs last month and both July and June`s private-sector job figures were upwardly revised, the Labor Department said Friday.

Stock futures surged after the report was released. Wall Street analysts expected a smaller gain, according to Thomson Reuters.

While the report hardly suggests the economy is out of danger, it`s a reassuring sign after weeks of troubling data and comes after some encouraging economic figures in the past week.

The average rate for a 30-year fixed loan was 4.32 percent this week, down from 4.36 percent last week, mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday. That`s the lowest since Freddie Mac began tracking rates in 1971.

The average rate on 15-year fixed loan dropped to 3.83 percent from 3.86 percent the previous week. That`s the lowest on records starting in 1991.

Rates have been falling since spring as investors have shifted money into safer Treasury bonds. That has lowered their yields, which mortgage rates tend to track.

The National Association of Realtors said Thursday its seasonally adjusted index rose 5.2 percent from a month earlier to a reading of 79.4.

A reading of 100 indicates the average level of sales activity in 2001, when the index started. The reading was above that threshold from March 2003 through April 2007. It sank during the recession, only to surge above 100 a year ago when the government first offered tax incentives to spur sales.
