Stocks Gain; Dow Jones Closes Above 15,000

Stocks edged higher on Tuesday, taking cue from global markets, as investors continued to pour money into equity markets. The Dow Jones closed above the 15,000 mark for the first time, while the S&P 500 rose to a fresh high.

The Dow Jones ended the day 0.58% higher at 15,056.20, the S&P 500 ended the day 0.52% higher at 1,625.96, and the Nasdaq ended the day 0.11% higher at 3,396.63.

All sectors in the S&P 500 except Technology ended the day in green. The gains were led by Consumer Cyclical sector, which ended the day 1.12% higher. Industrials ended the day 0.98% higher. Basic Materials sector rose 0.54%, while Energy sector rose 0.78%. Technology sector ended the day 0.15% lower.

Among the major movers on Tuesday were Mercadolibre Inc. (NASDAQ: MELI), which ended the day 17.88% higher at $122.54, Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: ARNA), which ended the day 10.90% higher at $8.34, Aruba Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: ARUN), which ended the day 22.81% lower at $17.02, Alcatel Lucent SA (ADR) (NYSE: ALU), which ended the day 9.92% higher at $1.44, and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT), which ended the day 1.30% lower at $33.31.

European markets ended mostly higher on Tuesday, with the FTSE 100 Index in London closing 0.55% higher, and the CAC 40 Index in Paris closing 0.37% higher. Asian markets also ended mostly higher overnight, with the Nikkei 225 Index in Japan closing 3.55% higher, and the Hang Seng Index in Hong Kong closing 0.58% higher.
